Mandatory to link PAN to Aadhaar by 31 December
A public message issued by the Income Tax Department said that “for a better future and to continue the income tax service, you must mandatorily link your PAN card before December 31”.
In September last year, the Supreme Court had declared the Aadhaar scheme of the Center as constitutionally valid and declared Aadhaar’s biometric ID mandatory for issuing PAN cards and filing income tax returns.
According to Section 139-AA (2) of the Income Tax Act, every person who has a PAN card and is eligible to get an Aadhaar card by July 1, 2017, has to tell the Aadhaar number his / her Aadhaar number.
Aadhaar is issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to a resident of India. PAN issued by the Income Tax Department is a 10 digit alphanumeric number issued to an individual, firm or institution.
