Vodafone CEO says situation in India fragile, future of company in balance

Vodafone has said that its future in India will remain in the supreme court balance till the government continues to impose more taxes and charges on operators. His reference was towards the license fee and spectrum usage charge imposed by the government.

Vodafone CEO Nick Reid said on Tuesday, “We have a huge financial burden because of uncooperative regulations and too much tax.” Above all, our favorable decision did not come even in the Supreme Court.

The government had asked to pay around Rs 40,000 crore as license fee and spectrum usage charge on Vodafone-Idea. The Supreme Court has upheld this decision of the government.

Commenting on the future of telecom operators in India, the Vodafone CEO said, “It would be fair to say that the situation is critical”. Last month, the British operator made it clear that it would continue to invest in the Indian market and sought government support in the current challenging times.

The Vodafone Group had said in its statement. However, ‘Vodafone is aware of the false and baseless rumors going on in some Indian media. However, saying that we have decided to exit the market. We want to say clearly that these reports are not true and are malicious. ‘

Vodafone has demanded a relief package from the government which includes the scrapping of 2-year spectrum payments. Also, reducing license fees and taxes, waiving interest and penalty in the Supreme Court case.
