The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted bail to the former finance minister and Congress leader P Chidambaram in the INX Media case. However, he will remain in jail till October 24 in a case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Chidambaram filed a bail petition in the Supreme Court on 15 October. The CBI then filed a charge sheet against Chidambaram in the INX Media case.
Justice R. The Bhanumati-led bench granted bail to Chidambaram on condition of not leaving the country. They granted him bail on a personal bond of one lakh rupees. However, the apex court also said that Chidambaram would be released if they do not need him in any other case. The Supreme Court quashed the Delhi High Court’s September 30 decision.
Chidambaram took bribe as finance minister: CBI
The CBI had alleged in the charge sheet that Chidambaram, while the Finance Minister, took a bribe of Rs 305 crore in 2007 to INX Media. They got approval from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board for taking. It also involved several government officials in this decision process, we may name one of which in the CBI charge sheet. However, the name of the officer, believed to be close to Indrani Mukherjee and Peter Mukherjee, was not disclosed. Indrani can be a government witness in the CBI charge sheet. He is in jail for the murder of daughter Sheena Bora.
ED questioned him for two hours
On October 16, the Enforcement Directorate questioned former Finance Minister P Chidambaram (ED) in a money laundering case involving INX Media. The ED had reached Tihar Jail on getting permission from the special court. They arrested Chidambaram after questioning.
