New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson became the highest run-scoring captain in ICC World Cup history during Sunday’s final against England at Lord’s.
He was one run short of the former Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardena’s record — 548 runs from 11 innings in the 2007 World Cup — going into the final.
As Williamson took his first run he became the highest scoring captain of all-time in World Cup history, his feat coming from 10 innings.
The 28-year-old scored 30 runs before being dismissed by England pacer Liam Plunkett.
Williamson was placed fourth in the highest run-getters’ chart with 578 runs in the tournament.
He held the New Zealand innings in the semi-final against India, scored two centuries in the tournament and provided his off-spin services to the team when in need.
Under his leadership, the Kiwis won five matches from nine fixtures in the group stage.
