Chennai Records Highest Rainfall in a Single Day in October Since 2014

New Delhi: Chennai and its neighbouring areas were subjected to intense thunderstorms and heavy rainfall on Thursday causing waterlogging in several parts of the city.

Several parts of Chennai have reported waterlogging after the city recorded an average rainfall of 97.27 mm on Thursday. Areas including Vyasarpadi, Egmore, Palavakkam, Parrys, Kilpauk, MMDA Colony, Thiruvanmiyur witnessed waterlogging.

According to a Times of India report, the city received the highest amount of rainfall in a single day in October since 2014.

While Nungambakkam registered nearly 13 cm of rain till 8.30 am on Thursday, weather stations in Anna University (13.4 cm), Ennore (8 cm), Red Hills (13 cm), Satyabama University (6 cm) and Meenambakkam (5 cm) recorded moderate to heavy rainfall.

S. Balachandran, Deputy Director of Meteorology, Chennai, has said that rain over the city and neighbouring areas will continue for next few days.

Balachandran also added that upper air circulation over southwest Bay of Bengal off the northern Tamil Nadu coast had influenced intense thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and that the rain was triggered by moist northeasterly wind.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has also forecast heavy rainfall in eight districts over the next 24 hours, as per the Indian Express. According to the RMC, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Villupuram, Tenkasi, Ranipet, Virudhunagar and Tirunelveli districts will receive heavy rain
