In a positive trend as far as the crime rate in the city is concerned, a survey of 24,290 households across the city commissioned by NGO Praja Foundation to the Hansa Research, found that 86 per cent of its people feel; 79 percent of the city’s people feel it is secure for women, children and senior citizens within a locality, and 83 percent of the people feel secure while travelling from one place to another within the city.
The survey also revealed that those staying in South-Mumbai feel the safest. The survey further revealed that women feel more secure in the city as compared to men.
As per the survey, 87 per cent women feel safe in the city, 80 per cent women feel the city is secure for women, children, and senior citizens as long as they are in a locality, and 84 per cent women feel secure while travelling from one place to another within the city.
“From the 24,290 households surveyed by us, 13 per cent of respondents had witnessed crimes and 45 per cent of the respondents, who had witnessed crimes, had informed the police. However, 69 per cent of the respondents, who had witnessed crimes and informed the police, were satisfied with the latter’s response,” Nitai Mehta, founding trustee of the Praja Foundation, said.
Mehta further added, almost 50 per cent people who have witnessed crimes, but had not informed the police have stated that speaking to police officials is a painful task and they did not want to be involved in any trouble.
“From the 24,290 households surveyed by us, 37 percent of the respondents had faced crime, 45 per cent of them had informed the police, and 56 per cent of them were satisfied with the police response,” Mehta said.
“There has been an improvement with regard to petty crime cases such as chain snatching. A lot of initiative has been taken by the police to create awareness among citizens. The 14 per cent that feels that Mumbai is an unsafe city is still a substantial concern. A city like Mumbai deserves better policing. Also people travelling very late in the night feel the city is unsafe,” Mehta said.
