Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon passed away after a prolonged illness at the age of 85.
Tandon was admitted to the hospital after complaining of breathing problems, difficulty in urination and fever.
Tandon, 85, had been undergoing treatment at hospital since June 11.
Tandon’s son Ashutosh Tandon announced the demise of his father on Twitter. “Babuji is no more,” he tweeted.
President Kovind expressed condolences saying that we have lost a legendary leader today. “In the passing away of Madhya Pradesh Governor Shri Lal Ji Tandon, we have lost a legendary leader who combined cultural sophistication of Lucknow and acumen of a national stalwart. I deeply mourn his death. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends,” he tweeted.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday expressed condolences over the demise of Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon.
“Shri Lalji Tandon will be remembered for his untiring efforts to serve society. He played a key role in strengthening the BJP in Uttar Pradesh. He made a mark as an effective administrator, always giving importance to public welfare. Anguished by his passing away,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that Tandon devoted his life to the service of the people, and residents of Uttar Pradesh still appreciate his work.
“The news of the demise of Shri Lalji Tandon, Governor of Madhya Pradesh and a powerful personality of Uttar Pradesh, is very painful. With Tandonji I had the opportunity to work for a long time. His long public life has been devoted to the service of the public and he has left a distinct mark on his work,” he tweeted.
“Tandonji, highly sociable by nature, was also very popular among workers. People of Lucknow and Uttar Pradesh still appreciate the development work done by him in various positions. May God provide patience and strength to all bereaved families in this hour of grief. Om Shanti!” he said in another tweet.
Taking to Twitter, Union Minister Smriti Irani tweeted: “I am pained to hear about the sad demise of Shri Lalji Tandon. A stalwart, Babuji helped pave the way for many youngsters, guiding us gently on our ideological journey. My condolences to Gopal bhaiya & family. Om Shanti.”
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday condoled the death of state governor Lalji Tandon, saying he will always be remembered for his contribution towards the nation’s progress.
Expressing grief over his death, Chouhan, in a series of tweets, said, As the governor of Madhya Pradesh, he always inspired us to follow the path of goodness. He will be remembered for his contribution in the progress of the nation. Though, he is no more with us, he will be in our memories forever.”
“He guided all of us for a long time and served the nation and the people by presenting an amazing example. He also played an important role in strengthening the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, he said.
Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijaya Singh in his condolence message said, “The generation of BJP/RSS leaders with a character to serve the people is getting ended now. I pray to God to give peace to the departed soul and enough strength to the family to bear the loss.”
His last rites will be performed at Gulala Ghat in Lucknow at 4:30 pm on Tuesday.
