Onion inflation has also eased the tears of the state governments. Due to supply shortage, while the sale of cheap onions in government vendors and vans has stopped, its prices in retail have once again skyrocketed.

Onion prices reach 90 rupees in retail

Imported from abroad and onions from other states are coming to Delhi’s mandis due to crop failure due to rains in Maharashtra, the biggest onion producer, yet the supply here is less by 500 tonnes daily.

Stock limit extended indefinitely

Meanwhile, the central government on Wednesday decided to extend the ban on indefinitely the onion stock limit for traders across the country indefinitely. At the same time, Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan expressed his inability to tell how long onion prices will normal. He said, ‘It is not in our hands. The government is making maximum efforts, but who can win by nature. ‘ “The stock holding limit for retailers and wholesalers is being raised till further orders,” he said. This limit was imposed in September. Currently, retailers can keep onions up to 100 quintals and wholesalers up to 500 quintals.

Economical sale of onion closed

The onion, which was getting Rs 60-70 per kg at the retail shops last week, has now reached Rs 80-90. The government has stopped the sale of affordable onion at the rate of Rs 30 per kg. On Wednesday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal argued behind the government onion shutdown that he was not getting onions from the Center. He said, “We sell onions to the public only from central agencies. I will write to the Center to start supplying onion to the Delhi government so that the public can get some relief. ‘

Rate of Rs 70 per kg in mandis in Pune

On the other hand, the crisis of onion supply is becoming bigger in the mandis of Maharashtra. According to a report from Pune, on Wednesday, the wholesale rate above Rs 70 in many mandis of the state, while retail prices recorded up to Rs 110 a kg. The average wholesale prices of onions in Solapur, Sangamner, and Vasi have been recorded at Rs 75 per kg this week.

6090 tons of onion will import

The central government has decided to import 6090 tonnes of onions, but traders do not expect that it will affect prices too much. Onion trader Surendra Budhiraja in Azadpur said that at present, only a slight softening of prices can be expected. The peak supply of the new crop will be in February. If the weather is good then the prices can go back to normal. However, concern is being raised about the rise in retail prices more than wholesale. Food Supply Department officials have also given strict instructions to APMC officials to stop hoarding and black marketing.
