Zuckerberg announces his new social VR product ‘Facebook Spaces’: Virtual reality weds social Media

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Back in 2010, I’d play a lot of Vice City and San Andreas and they would keep me close to hypnotised with their metamorphic leap from two dimensional video cassette games that I grew up playing (Super Mario, obviously) to an outrageously brilliant 3D universe.

What I liked best is that you could do right about anything, yes, even kill a man or several men depending upon the degree of mastery that you’d acquired over the game, after hours in front of a Windows XP system or by sheer possession of ‘cheatcodes’. You’d be sitting before the computer screen twisting yourself into a knot when it’d actually feel like you were really only a part of the fictitious city of San Andreas, wreaking havoc. That’s the beauty of virtual reality (VR).
Cut to 2017, Facebook in a ‘giant leap for mankind’ or so Zuckerberg assumes, has launched Facebook Spaces marrying virtual reality to social media, two of the reigning dictators responsible for our fast growing human utopia. Facebook’s F8 conference saw a beaming Zuckerberg announcing his first flagship social VR product, Facebook Faces on Tuesday morning. In the 2016 Oculus Connect conference, Facebook had revealed the then yet to be launched product. Facebook Spaces needs an Oculus Touch VR setup namely the Oculus Rift headset and traceable Touch controllers. Gear VR developed by Oculus will not be enough since Facebook space needs you to use your hands. Very high processing power is also a complete essential for Facebook’s new social VR app to function.

Take a look at Facebook Spaces’ teaser trailer released yesterday on Gamespot’s YouTube channel and you’d know what everything I just said means.

“Now, your Facebook friends can join you—virtually—in Rift with Facebook Spaces! This new VR app takes some of the best features of Facebook and brings them into your VR space. Spend time with friends and family like you’re really there, step inside 360 videos, draw and play with Touch, and more”, says the description box.

But the creepiest thing about Facebook Spaces is that your VR clone can only smile. It can’t laugh or get mad/angry. Now just imagine a world like that!
