Deepika Padukone could not hold back her tears at the trailer launch of her new film, Chhapaak, where she plays an acid attack survivor.

Directed by Meghna Gulzar, it is based on the real-life story of Laxmi Aggarwal.

“I had only thought that the trailer would be shown and we will come on the stage. I didn’t think I would have to speak about it too once on the stage. Whenever I watch the trailer, I… can we talk about this later? I am really sorry,” Deepika said.

Meghna explained that the actor had not seen the complete trailer earlier, and that’s why she felt overwhelmed.

Deepika talks about the film, amid tears, in this video below:

The 33-year-old actor says she had an instant emotional connection with the story, which is rare in an artiste’s career.

“Usually, you have to sit through the entire process and have to decide whether you want to do a film or not. It’s not often where you know instantly in first minutes of meeting a director that this is what you want to commit your life to but Chhapaak is that for me,” Deepika said.

Vikrant, on the other hand, said he is a ‘moti chamadi ka insaan’ and does not break down easily, in this video.

“It’s been an incredible journey, emotionally, putting it together and I feel like, irrespective of how it’s received and how it does, it will be the most special film of my career and I truly hope all of you see,” Deepika added.

“The impact that the film is supposed to have on all of us and the reason why I have made this movie, I hope you see in it what we saw. We have made it with a lot of love, passion, enthusiasm and responsibility.”

Meghna, known for sensitive depiction of complex issues in films such as Filhaal and Raazi, said Chhapaak is an urgent and relevant story in today’s context.

“It is relevant in today’s times, given the situation of women in the country right now. I’m happy Deepika has given her face for Malti and completely let Malti take over.”

Deepika burnt her prosthetic makeup as soon as the shoot was over, and she tells us why in this video:

Chhapaak will release on January 10.
